Ken’s love of music began long before he first picked up a guitar – air-guitaring on an old tennis racket as a kid, dreaming of the stage. He started playing guitar properly at 13, learning surf rock classics like Wipeout, Pipeline, and classic rock staples like The Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black from a family friend — before diving headfirst into teaching himself.
By 15, Ken was already playing in a band and writing original music. Over the years, he’s performed in a variety of groups — from grunge-influenced rock outfits to acoustic duos — playing everything from pub gigs and private events to community festivals and weddings. His journey has taken him from the garage to the stage and everywhere in between.
Ken’s teaching career began in his early 20s while working at Music Corner in Whyalla. It was there he discovered the joy of helping others learn guitar and bass. His live music experience also expanded during this time, working as a roadie and learning the ropes of PA setup, live mixing, and lighting at events across South Australia.
In 2014, Ken formed the acoustic duo Liquid Lunch with his partner Michele Akers. Together they’ve played for over a decade, releasing original music and performing at pubs, clubs, wineries, festivals, and private events across the state.
Six years ago, Ken and Michele purchased Port Lincoln Music World, allowing them to focus more on teaching. Since then, Ken has developed a structured 10-week beginner guitar course (with an intermediate course on the way), hosted workshops, and launched The Sloop Sessions — a welcoming open mic night that gives emerging musicians a safe and supportive space to perform. He also facilitates the Guitar Club (soon to be rebranded as The Foundry Guitar Club) — a creative space for local guitarists to grow, connect, and play.
Ken brings decades of playing, writing, performing, and teaching experience to his students. His greatest reward? Seeing the confidence and joy that music brings to others. He believes music is for everyone —and he’s here to help you find your sound.
